HPEC for Defense & Military Applications

Computation-intensive applications like radar processing, electronic warfare (EW), signals intelligence and situational awareness enhancement drive the military’s increased reliance on high-performance embedded computing (HPEC). Designing electronics for these types of applications demands high-performance in relatively small, rugged embedded form factors while balancing with size, weight and power consumption (SWaP) requirements. Unmanned surveillance vehicles, for example, process volumes of sensor data and yet must remain compact and relatively low power.

With the rise of cloud computing in defense applications, HPEC may also serve as mobile tactical clouds in hostile and crisis environments. Besides being at the very edge of network infrastructure, these battlefields and disaster areas are also subject to intermittent network connectivity and other high stress resource constraints. HPEC in this situation can provide military and emergency personnel critical intelligence when their vehicles are disconnected from the tactical networks.
