Sound playback, both sound effects and voice, are now built into a great many household products and industrial equipment. Sound playback has also gained popularity as an important feature for providing improved accessibility for visually impaired or elderly users. Providing sound playback in consumer products and compact industrial equipment requires very cost effective solutions giving the added functionality at minimum additional cost.

Renesas provides audio decompression software libraries that operate at high speed and with a small memory footprint. The RL78 Family and the RX Family microcontrollers, with the ability to easily generate PWM signals, without the need for special peripheral devices, allows easy addition of advanced flexible sound playback capabilities to products that previously had a simple buzzer as their only sound playback.
